Volleyball Glossary

An alphabetical list of common volleyball terms.

  • Ace: A legal serve that results directly in a point.
  • Assist: A pass that directly leads to a kill attempt.
  • Block: A defensive play at the net to stop or redirect an attack.
  • Dig: A defensive pass of a hard-driven attacked ball.
  • Kill: An attack that results in an immediate point.
  • Libero: A back-row defensive specialist with unique substitution rules.
  • Rotation: The clockwise movement of players after winning the serve.
  • Set: An overhead pass used to position the ball for an attacker.
  • Side out: Winning the rally while receiving serve and earning serve.
  • Spike: A forceful attack hit into the opponent's court.
